IPTI Master Class: Treatment of Complex Childhood Trauma: A Flexible Approach for Supporting Resilience in Children and Families

There is an increased awareness of the number of infants, young children, and their families who have experienced multiple and/or prolonged traumatic stress. No one protocol, approach, or intervention can meet all of the needs. In this Master Class, Dr. Blaustein will present the theoretical approach, the core domains, and the building blocks of ARC (Attachment, Self-Regulation, and Competency), a flexible, guiding structure to inform our approach to engaging with young children and families.

Infant-Parent Training Institute: Maternal Mental Health Course

A mother's mental health affects her own sense of self, the well-being of her children, her close relationships, and the functioning of the family. A mother of an infant or young child who is struggling with depression, anxiety, or other emotional difficulties faces multiple challenges in coping and parenting. This course will examine the profound emotional transformation of becoming a mother, the influence of culture on maternal mental health, and the impact of mental health on the parent-child relationship.

Connected Beginnings Releases Foundations of the CSEFEL Pyramid Model Training Materials in Spanish

Connected Beginnings Training Institute (CBTI) is pleased to announce that the trainer and participant materials for the Foundations of the CSEFEL Pyramid Model course are now available in Spanish translation, through generous funding from the Massachusetts Department of Early Education and Care (EEC). These materials will extend the reach of Pyramid Model trainers to additional, non-English speaking early care and education providers across the state.

The Boston Public Health Commission is seeking candidates with both professional/educational background in early childhood development, social work or other relevant field AND the lived experience of raising young children with mental health conditions or social and emotional developmental challenges, to join the Launch/MyChild team. Boston residency or willingness to relocate is required.

Wheelock College to launch Center for Assessment and Screening Excellence (CASE)

Connected Beginnings is pleased to be a collaborator, with Wheelock College colleagues and Wheelock’s ASPIRE Institute, in the development of its new Center for Assessment and Screening Excellence (CASE). The center is funded by The Massachusetts Department of Early Education and Care (EEC). It will provide training and technical assistance in early childhood assessment, screening and program measurement to early childhood and out-of-school time professionals. It will also serve in an assessment policy advisory capacity to the state. Connected Beginnings is involved in both the development of course content, including the creation of on-line and live courses in developmental and social-emotional screening and assessment, and in providing support for CASE data management and evaluation activities.

Wheelock/ASPIRE Institute is currently looking for (4) full-time post-Master’s degree graduate fellows to play a key role in advancing CASE performance objectives. Wheelock/ASPIRE Institute is also seeking a full-time Center Manager for this project. This position can also be applied for via Wheelock's Human Resource webpage

Professional Development Opportunity--Brain Building and Early Literacy and Numeracy: Strategies and Supports for Young Children (Birth to 8)

The Departments of Early Education and Care (EEC) and Elementary and Secondary Education (ESE) are inviting instructional and community leaders to a seven-month professional development opportunity focused on building and sustaining strong Birth to Grade 3 systems of services and supports for young children and their families. This professional development opportunity will be kicked off by a regional conference (Boston, Worcester or Westfield) in November, Brain Building and Early Literacy and Numeracy: Strategies and Supports for Young Children (Birth to 8), and will be followed by three regional, seven-month, professional learning communities. Connected Beginnings Training Institute's Mary Watson Avery will be leading the professional learning communities for the social-emotional strand.

IPTI Master Class: Love and PTSD: Understanding the Impact of Interpersonal Violence in Families with Babies and Young Children

Recent advances in brain research have provided great insight into how the brain continues to grow and develop after birth. While positive, nurturing early experiences help the brain develop well, experiences of neglect and abuse can cause some children to develop serious emotional and behavioral challenges. Integrating her interests in neuroscience and relational/cultural theory, Dr. Amy Banks will lead us in a training to gain greater understanding of trauma’s impact on the brain of the developing child and on his/her relationships with primary caregivers and others.

We are very pleased to announce that Connected Beginnings Training Institute (CBTI), formerly an initiative of the United Way of Massachusetts Bay & Merrimack Valley, has joined Wheelock College as part of its Aspire Institute. The Aspire Institute is part of the College’s Academic Affairs Division.
